    Get out and Classic ski

at Old Shady Rest Campground!

Evening all:                                                                             December 14, 2007

Keith Dawley, our volunteer Extraordinaire, helped me sort out a bunch of logistical matters over the last several weeks.  We also serviced the Nordoni and all our other equipment necessary to produce great Nordic trails.

Today we took a shakedown tour of the areas we have committed to maintain groomed Nordic trails.  After track-packing with the Nordoni to determine overall depth and consistency of snowpack, we determined the area west of Sawmill Cutoff Road, the Old Shady Rest Campground loop, was ready.

On behalf of your Board of Directors, I want to encourage you to get out and enjoy it this weekend!  Naturally, more kilometers will be groomed when coverage improves such that damage to our equipment or natural resources are not of concern.

  • Thanks to all of you for your continued support and enthusiasm towards this community-based Nordic Trail System.

Second Annual Fall Fundraiser

a huge success!

Good afternoon all:                                                                November 20, 2007

Just a quick note updating you on the November 16th Fall Fundraising Party at the Mammoth Ski Museum.  We had over 100 persons in attendance, all of whom indulged in the wonderful ambiance, excellent food and great company. Our thanks go out to Kendra Knight at the Mammoth Ski Museum and Susan Burgett with Anything Goes Fine Catering for all their assistance in pulling off this event.

  • So, you may be asking yourself, “How did we do?”  I am pleased to announce that those in attendance generously contributed $5500 during the evening.  The last several weeks have continued to generate contributions as well, bringing our total from October 1st to just over $13,000.  Simply amazing, yes?

If you have not yet taken the opportunity to become a member, renew your membership or make a contribution that matches your desire to see us succeed, please consider doing so.  Membership forms are available at Here for Individual memberships , and Here for Business memberships or larger contributions.  Based on the last few days’ snowfall, it looks like Mother Nature is planning to oblige us with a great opportunity to groom some trails!  One more storm ought to do it!

Consider this:  a $250 contribution will fund the preparation of groomed Nordic trails for one winter day of Nordic fun.  Your gift benefits you and our entire community; families and their children, local businesses and all our winter visitors to boot.  Here are a few variations on this theme:

A half day at $125

A full day at $250

A week at $1750

And so on, as you like it.

  • Mammoth Nordic Foundation is a non-profit 501c3 corporation,

making your contributions tax-deductible.

Thanks again, and look for more announcements soon!

Middle School kids enjoy a day at

Tamarack Cross Country

Ski Center

March 30, 2007

Ten students from Claudia Gunn’s Middle School Class joined volunteers from Mammoth Nordic and Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra for a brilliant day in the sun at Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center on March 30th, 2007.

Thanks go out to Tamarack for providing gear for the day!

Jim Tabb, Adaptive Physical Education Specialist from the Mono County Office of Education, contacted Mammoth Nordic about putting the outing together.  “Bringing the kids to the Lakes Basin in winter

and introducing them to quiet winter sports

teaches them physical activities they can participate in for the rest of their life.”  He also highlighted the peer mentoring opportunities for the kids with previous Nordic skiing experience that shared their enthusiasm with other kids new to quiet winter sports.

Brian Knox, president of Mammoth Nordic, explained this outing as being in sync with his organizations’ ambitions.  “One of our goals is to

create opportunities to introduce everyone to quiet winter sports, allowing them to make the most of the  place we are fortunate to live.  We plan to create regular Nordic adventures with Claudia’s class next winter.  Putting smiles on these kids’ faces is contagious!”

Robin Conners, Program Director for Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra, looks forward to expanding their involvement with Mammoth Nordic next season.  “Nordic sports are another wonderful way to get kids outside, building skills and self-esteem. We believe the freedom and exhilaration of outdoor challenges changes lives. No one should be left behind simply because of a disability."

Mammoth Nordic partners with

MMSO for Snow-shoes!

March 15, 2007

Mammoth Nordic, in partnership with the Mammoth Middle School Organization (MMSO), purchased 27 pair of Series 9 snow-shoes from Atlas Snow-Shoe Company for Physical Education teacher Todd Hensley’s P.E. program.

Roger Rilling, left, and Brian Knox, right, present Todd Hensley with 27 pair

of snow-shoes for his P.E. students.

These snow-shoes will allow my kids to play outdoors during the five months we are normally stuck inside.  Introducing my kids to Nordic sports allows me to help them discover their aerobic potential!” said Hensley.

  Sydney Knadler &

  Bailey Rowen get

        some air!

Leslie Dawson, chairperson for the MMSO, expressed her appreciation:

"We are happy to partner with Mammoth Nordic and provide additional equipment for Todd’s excellent programs."

Leslie also pointed out the MMSO recently contributed $2500 to the P.E. department for a variety of cool new indoor gear selected by Mr. Hensley.

 Danielle Kelly does

   a backscratcher!

Mammoth Nordic paired their $1000 contribution with $500 from the MMSO.  Brian Knox, president of Mammoth Nordic, explained the generous support from Atlas Snow-shoe Company allowed the Middle School to receive the best quality equipment available, valued at over $3400.  The impetus for facilitating the equipment deal rose from Mammoth Nordic’s commitment to use their Nordoni groomer and YTS tracksetter to maintain groomed trails on School District property, adjacent to the elementary, middle and high school.

He also described additional goals the club is poised to deliver.  “Mammoth Nordic plans to provide cross-country ski equipment for the School District as well.  We believe all the kids deserve the opportunity to try cross-country skiing, right on campus, throughout the day during P.E. or in after-school programs we would like to offer.  We are also working on safe rights of way that will allow kids participating in these programs safe access to the recently launched Mammoth Lakes Nordic Trail System.”

If you are interested in learning more about MMSO, please contact Leslie Dawson at ldawson@msi.ucsd.edu .

Damn, that was fun!

                                                                                                      March 5, 2007

Mammoth Nordic hosted our annual full moon sojourn for dinner up to Rock Creek Lodge March 3rd, 2007.  The Nordoni made the journey and put down classic tracks for the 'striders and cordoroy for the skate-folk on the way!

Vanna points out the many fine features of the Nordoni.

No buts about it, a fab time was had by all.  Oops, my bad, there were some butts: several mystery streakers blazed by the dining room window, entertaining all who didn't have their back to the glass.  Sidney Q, who didn't catch a glimpse on the first pass, raced outside to chase down some ... buttocks.

Thanks go out to the bitchin' staff at Rock Creek Lodge for laying out such a fine spread and taking great care of us throughout the evening.  For more from the Mammoth Times on the evening and a few more choice images, click this!

Let the fullness of this evening convince you to RSVP early for our next event.  We want to see you there!

Move that Tree!

                                                                  March 1, 2007

Mammoth Nordic recently teamed up with the Mammoth Basin Nordic Ski Patrol to remove a large tree knocked down by huge winds in the recent storm activity to smack the Eastside.

Keith Dawley & I checked out this downed Jeffery blocking the South loop in the Obsidian Dome Nordic Area and limbed it up for removal.

We met Patrol Director Wayne Wong and his crew at the Obsidian Dome Nordic Area trailhead several days later and toured in to tackle moving this beast off the trail to allow for grooming in the future.

We tried us VS them:             It made bettter sense to work together:

After a quick lesson in the safe use of a cross-cut saw (also referred to as a misery whip) from Keith, we had the bruiser bucked into rollable chunks.  Bodies in the field make all the difference:

The end result? A gap wide enough to (you guessed it) drive the Nordoni through!

Please visit www.mammothskipatrol.com to learn more about the important work being done by Wayne and his team.  They are a fine bunch of folks and Mammoth Nordic looks forward to working with these guys again!

Brian Knox, Mary Kay Prentice, Roger Rilling, Phyllis Benham, Elise Howell, and Susan Burgbett all play second fiddle to the Nordoni!

Thanks go out to all of you who attended our Ribbon-cutting last week for the Mammoth Lakes Nordic Trail System.  At last count, 75 folks found the time to show their support for community Nordic Trails!

The day dawned clear and cold, crucial to pulling off our grooming mission.  Keith Dawley and Roger Rilling worked with me on Monday and Tuesday to prepare for Wednesdays' demonstration of what our grooming equipment can do.  No question about it, the Nordoni can put down killer corduroy and sweet classic tracks!

Stellar Brew came through with some great soups, chili, bread and beverages, enjoyed by those in atttendance and served inside the new Welcome Center.

Click over to the Mammoth Times for more and here for a Map of the trails!

You are welcome to join Town staff, Town Council members, the United States Forest Service and Mammoth Nordic for a light lunch and to help celebrate the opening of this new winter recreational community asset.

Mammoth Nordic wants you to have a great time the first time and invites all Nordic enthusiasts to experience the best that Mammoth Lakes has to offer with this new trail," stated Knox.

"We believe this program is in the best interest of our winter recreational community and encourage all visitors and residents to use the trail throughout the day, or even during your lunch break," commented Danna Stroud, Tourism and Recreation Director for the Town of Mammoth Lakes.

Alpina Sherpa Fundraiser

a huge success!

Good evening all:

I wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate your support of Mammoth Nordic.  The event was   fantastic, & I would like to thank those who generously donated the following:

  • Susan & Mary at Anything Goes Fine Catering for the delicious food!
  • Sean Turner at Mammoth Brewing Company for the cold & sudsy beer!
  • Phyllis & Mary Kay for the fine wines!
  • TJ Chase & Stuart Brown from the Mammoth Ski Museum and the Mammoth Lakes Foundation for sharing a great venue with us for this event!
  • Roger Rilling, Elise Howell, Susan Burgett, Phyllis & Herb Benham, Mary Kay Prentice, & Shalle Genevieve for all their work in planning & pulling off such a great event!

Many of you have graciously approached me with your thanks.  I have always had a difficult time accepting praise.  I want you to understand that I appreciate your acknowledgement of the work your organization has done on behalf of your community.  But I need you to understand this:

The needs of the Nordic community will never be met without our community expressing its desires.  And it’s you that are making those desires clear.  You are the Nordic community.  I am simply willing to convey your expectations to those organizations that we need partnership with in order to make it happen.

The Mammoth Lakes Trail System (MLTS), along with our community, has been patiently waiting for the Towns’ commitment to allow winter grooming.  Mammoth Nordic has been and is ready, willing and able to provide any assistance necessary that will shape this success.  I have reached out to you and you have generously reached back.  And for that, I am more grateful to you than I can adequately express.  Thank you very much.

I’m guessing you are asking yourself, “So, how’d we do?”

Wow, Mammoth Nordic (this means you!) did extraordinarily well!  Over the course of Friday evening, we raised over $12,000. As I explained to those in attendance, simply by picking up the phone and contacting as many persons we could think of that may share our enthusiasm, $23,000 was raised prior to the event itself!  Our goal was $50,000 and we are well on our way!

If you have not yet renewed your membership or joined our club, please consider being a part of what we are working towards.  I am happy to meet with you personally, at your convenience, if you would like to learn more about our ambitions.  You can find membership forms here, and more information about us at www.mammothnordic.com

  Thank you very much,

  Brian Knox

Grooming to begin on

Mammoth Lakes Trail System

this winter!

Negotiations went well with Town staff during the course of the summer.  I am happy to report that we are finalizing plans to roll out a Pilot Grooming Program on several sections of the Mammoth Lakes Trail System!

The Board of Directors of Mammoth Nordic decided in September the time has come to make a financial commitment to our long-held belief that a winter resort town the caliber of Mammoth Lakes deserves a Community-based Nordic Trail System.  Mammoth Nordic has purchased an Alpina Sherpa Groomer, en-route from Italy, and a YTS tracksetter.  She's a beauty, eh?

This equipment will create a skating lane nine feet wide and lay down beautiful double tracks for classic skiing in a single pass!  Mammoth Nordic will use our equipment for the benefit of our community, serving the growing Nordic needs and desires of our locals & visitors alike.  We are also finalizing arrangements to offer a groomed trail system on the campus of the Elementary, Middle and High School for the kids.  How 'bout those apples?

Now more than ever, your support is needed.  Mammoth Nordic is only as strong as its' membership.  A large, enthusiastic constituency is critical to illustrating a community-wide desire for improved Nordic opportunities in and around Mammoth.  Please be a part of the progress we have made by renewing your membership today.  If you are not currently a member, please consider showing your support by joining!  If you are able to make a contribution beyond the annual membership cost, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please plan to join us for our season opening Mixer & Alpina Sherpa Fundraising Party!

  • Friday, November 17th, 2006.
  • 6:00 pm at the Mammoth Ski Museum.
  • Catering compliments of Anything Goes.
  • Wines compliments of Mammoth Nordic.
  • Great local beer from Mammoth Brewing Company.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

           Sincerely,

           Brian Knox

           President, Mammoth Nordic
